In August of 2003 Indigenous Peoples Project Directors, Karen and Antonio Ferreira, along with Diné (Navajo) elders Danny and Laurine John, were invited to submit a proposal to a Navajo Reservation hospital in Chinle, Arizona to provide a holistic educational program for 50 diabetics. The proposal was approved, and they began a series of seminars in March 2004.
Diversity of Medicines health and lifestyle education seminar series brought Karen and Antonio to the reservation 5 times in 2004, providing 5 four-day seminars over a 7 month period, featuring cooking classes, diet and lifestyle education, opening a food buying club, and planting and caring for organic (bio-dynamic) community gardens. Karen and Antonio work together with elders Danny and Laurine John, who provide Diné teachings on health, lifestyle, traditional herbal medicine, and sweat lodge ceremony.
