Papercrete Health Clinc - A Gift to the People Print E-mail

Over the past couple of years the IPP has been building a health clinic on the Sundance grounds. The building is constructed from papercrete, a wonderful ecological and economical building alternative. The clinic measures 64’ x 25’, and will have kitchen, library, pharmacy, waiting/reception area, as well as room for 8-10 massage tables. The building will be open for cost-free educational health fairs for the local Diné community and for research, study, and treatments year around.

Funds to initiate basic costs of the clinic were received from the Szekley Family Fund and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. Funding covered the acquisition of materials and supplies necessary for beginning to build the clinic and also provided funding to hire a specialist -- known to many as the Father of Papercrete, Mike McCain. McCain consulted during the building phase and trained volunteers and local native people in the method of papercrete construction.

The most recent development on the clinic construction included attaching the roof boards, enclosing the gable ends, and otherwise preparing the roof for the final covering.  Additional funding is needed to purchase baked enamel roofing material, and for labor to bring the building to completion. This project represents IPP's greatest need for funding, as as they still have to apply the plaster (interior and exterior), make the greenhouse and the shade patio, and do the finishing carpentry. Already there has been one health fair in the unfinished clinic building, and it currently also serves to house many of IPP’s supplies for the sundance clinic and kitchen.

Funding is sought for this holistic health education center offering cost free services.  If you'd like to make a tax free donation to assist with the completion of our clinic, please click on the button below to make your donation.  If you have any questions of require further information please contact Indigenous Peoples Project at your earliest convenience.
